SHIP'S DOCTOR - Maintaining Your Health

MAINTENANCE

I receive many questions about specific medical conditions and how to cope with them on a cruise. While I obviously cannot comment on each individual case (your own personal physician would be best qualified to help you) here are some general, "common sense" guidelines that might help...

In regards to a medical condition which is manageable at home I recommend you simply try to recreate an environment on board ship similar to that which works for you at home. Of course, you should consult your own physician for their suggestions on possible limitations or concerns.

Also, you should know what you can expect from your ship's medical staff. The staff can support most unique situations if given your needs, though some ships will of course be better equipped for your particular needs than others. Contact the cruise line ahead of time with specific concerns. Bring extra medication or supplies for any unforseen delays in the journey. These might be costly if purchased on board or in foreign ports, and they may even be unavailable.

If mobility is an issue, book a room close to the activities you will be most likely to join in on. Diet could be a factor for some passengers. Remember to stick with what works at home. If special dietary needs are a question contact the cruise line ahead of time to work out a special menu.

Although water on the ships receive treatment and are generally safe, try to stick with bottled water for drinking. This is a good practice as well travelling within your own country. Remember that ill effects from drinking local water may sometimes arise from the water treatment methods in that area.

As always my advice to travellers – know your limitations and prepare for any special needs. This should ensure a comfortable and safe trip!

Pleasant Journeys!
